It aims to promote research, strengthen networks of young researchers and encourage dialogue with communities, in the context where 70% of the African population will be under 40 years old in 20 years. ## Theme 2024 #### (Re)think / (Re)redress the image of Africa for the development of the continent This symposium, designed and organized by young African researchers, is part of a revisionist perspective on Africa. It aims to fuel debates in Africanist intellectual circles around the revision of the image of the African continent in the context of a world order marked by the race for development, where the great powers are committed to an asymmetrical promotion of their culture that they pose as an implicit bait to the rest of the world. From inspiring figures to community initiatives, this narrative celebrates women's empowerment as a key driver of progress and sustainable transformation on the African continent. ##### Youth demographics and development in Africa Delving into the demographic dynamism of Africa's youth, this theme explores its crucial impact on the continent's development. From expanding demographics to the unique aspirations and challenges of young people, this perspective highlights the transformative potential of this generation to shape a prosperous and sustainable future in Africa. ##### Culture and development in Africa African culture as an engine for development. This perspective explores how the continent's cultural richness and diversity contribute to strengthening identity, promoting social inclusion and stimulating economic growth, thus shaping a dynamic future for Africa. ##### Religion, spirituality and development in Africa Religion, spirituality, and development in Africa are closely linked, shaping people's values, social practices, and aspirations. Africans aspire to accessible, quality and relevant education systems, fostering creativity, innovation and the development of the skills needed to meet the needs of the labor market. They envision an inclusive and dynamic education that stimulates economic and social development, while offering equitable opportunities for all individuals. ##### Start-ups, entrepreneurship and ICT Start-ups, entrepreneurship and information and communication technologies (ICTs) are emerging as key vectors of development in the contemporary African landscape. Emerging start-ups reflect the growing innovation and creativity of African entrepreneurs, exploiting the opportunities offered by technological advances to solve local and global problems. Entrepreneurship has become an engine of economic growth, creating jobs and stimulating innovation across the continent. ICT plays a central role in this movement, providing tools and platforms to connect entrepreneurs, access global markets and facilitate business transactions. Together, start-ups, entrepreneurship and ICT are helping to shape a promising future for Africa, stimulating innovation, economic growth and social transformation. ##### Languages and African integration Africa's linguistic diversity poses challenges to its integration. Relations between Africa and the rest of the world are evolving, opening up new perspectives and challenges. However, questions persist about fairness, sovereignty and respect for African interests in these relationships. African sports and athletes have become important showcases for the continent. He received an MA and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in History on a Fulbright Scholarship. He also holds a DES in Philosophy from the Gamal Abdel Nasser University of Conakry (Guinea), and an Advanced Professional Degree in Journalism from the University of Dakar (current Cheikh Anta Diop University, Senegal). Camara taught at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida where he also served as Director of the McNair Scholars Program, Speaker of the Faculty Senate, and Associate Vice President for Academics. Il a assuré plusieurs charges administratives dont celle de chef de département d’Histoire et de Géographie de la faculté des sciences et technologies de l’éducation et de la formation (FASTEF) de l’université de Dakar. Depuis 1984, il est titulaire d’un doctorat de 3ème cycle en histoire de l’Université de Dakar. Après avoir été nommé en 2008 docteur *Honoris Causa* de l’université du Havre, il obtient en 2010 le titre de docteur en histoire (Ph.D) à l’université d’Amsterdam. Spécialiste de l’histoire du travail en Afrique de l’ouest francophone, il conduit ses recherches sur les migrations, les innovations pédagogiques et les réformes en éducation. Parallèlement à ses activités académiques, il est membre fondateur et coordonnateur du Groupe pour l’Etude et l’Enseignement de la Population (GEEP). Il s’agit d’une association professionnelle de recherche-action agréée comme organisation non-gouvernementale (ONG), qui intervient dans le domaine de l’éducation à la santé et du développement du leadership chez les jeunes. Most recently, she was a W. E. B. Du Bois Research Fellow at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. Dr. Ghazali’s research and scholarship center around themes of migration, structural oppression, urban precarity, racial, gender, and health inequalities, and the politics of death and dying. She pairs multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork with historical and archival research to shed light on experiential dimensions of state violence. Her analysis delineates structural factors that shape (im)mobility, morbidity, and mortality among marginalized communities in Africa, the Middle East, and the US. Ghazali’s scholarship puts medical anthropology in conversation with Black feminist, Pan-African, decolonial, and critical race studies and highlights the intersectional and nuanced ways violence and inequality are brought to bear on individual and communal bodies. Her work attends to creative agencies, embodied modes, political subjectivities, emergent moralities, alternative economies, and social networks people cultivate to live and die with dignity.
